TOWN OF EAST HARTFORD
FINE ARTS COMMISSION
Meeting of February 9, 2012



Vice Chair Florence Schroeter called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.  With only 5 Commissioners in attendance Vice Chair Schroeter stated she is calling a quorum according to Roberts Rules.

I.  ROLL CALL
PRESENT:  Terrye Blackstone; Glynis McKenzie; Judy Okeson; Florence Schroeter;
                      Prescille Yamamoto.       
                     
      ABSENT:    Regina Barall Karen Howe (excused); Hilde Mayranen-O’Brien (excused);  
             Maureen Rodgers (excused); Betty Russell (excused); Dan Russell (excused);
       John Ryan (excused); Sue Tukey (excused).
     
II.     MINUTES
MOTION  By Prescille Yamamoto
                Seconded by Judith Okeson
To approve the minutes of January 12, 2012
                        Approved.

 Discussion:  Judith Okeson stated that the East Hartford Public Schools should be aware of the drumming program being held this month.  The clerk will email Laura White, Department Head of Fine and Performing Arts.

Vice Chair Schroeter requested clarification on the Clare Gallery in Hartford.  It is at St. Patrick’s-St. Anthony’s Church.

III.    CHAIR’S REPORT
Florence Schroeter reported that she is a member of the East Hartford Library Commission.  She has spoken with Pat Jones to recommend that the library purchase the complete set of the Paul Bisaccia CDs.  He will take it under advisement.                                   

IV.     CORRESPONDENCE
        The following correspondence was received:
-  Thank you note from Principal Joanne LeBeau, Willowbrook School, for the story-teller   program sponsored by the Commission.
-  Terrye Blackstone received information from the Simsbury Light Opera Company.

V.      COMMITTEE REPORTS
EHSYF – St. Patrick’s Day program – 3/9/12 – 7:30 p.m.
Glynis McKenzie reported that the Marksmen will be performing on March 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the EHCCC.  Tickets are available by calling her or purchasing at the door.

The EHSYF Cabaret/Silent Auction will be held on April 28 at the Veteran’s Memorial Clubhouse.

DanceOngoing Willowbrook Program, Dance Program April 2012
No report at this time.
                                
Drama/Lecture/Poetry – Sankofa Kuumba Drummers – February 26 2:00 p.m.
        No report at this time.
                        
Music – Paul Bisaccia – May 6, 2012 – First Church
Vice Chair Schroeter reported she has heard from First Church to prepare for the performance in May.
She further reported that Paul Bisaccia will be releasing a new CD in April, “Mostly Chopin”.

Brass Quartet – Fall 2012
        No report at this time.

Photography
Per the email the clerk received from John Ryan, he is working with a colleague to find a suitable date.                                                                
Film Series                                            
Films are scheduled for February 11, March 10, April 14, 2012.
Glynis McKenzie reported the film for February 11 is called “Return to Hansala”.  She reported that there was publicity in the Hartford Courant as well as the Gazette.  She further stated that it was advertised on the Courant Website, under Towns, as well. The next film, March 10 is a Russian/French film titled “The Concert”.  She distributed flyers for publicity.

Glynis McKenzie reported that Park and Rec employee, Valerie Nettleton is assisting at the film concert. (Not as an employee, as a volunteer.)  She has recommended that the Commission give her a $25 honorarium for each film.

                To give Valerie Nettleton a $25 honorarium for her assistance with the film series.
                Approved.

Art – Harry White 2/12 – 2:00 p.m
Terrye Blackstone reported that artist Harry White will be doing a presentation this Sunday.  Informational flyers were sent out by the Art League inviting people to attend.  Terrye further stated that there was a misunderstanding of his fee for this program.  Last month the Commission approved $150 for this event.  His fee is $200.

                To approve an additional $50 for the Harry White demonstration.
                Approved.
        
VI.     OLD BUSINESS
None at this time.

VII.    NEW BUSINESS                            
Vice Chair Schroeter requested a note-taker for the March 8 meeting due to the absence of the clerk.  Judith Okeson will consider doing the minutes for this meeting.                           

VIII.  APPROVAL OF BILLS

                        Harry White (Art)               $50.00
                        Valerie Nettleton (Film Series) $50.00

IX.     MEMBER’S CONCERNS
Prescille Yamamoto stated for the record that she is concerned about the attendance of Commissioners at the Fine Arts meetings.

The next Fine Arts Meeting will be held on Thursday, March 8, 2012 at the EHCCC, 50 Chapman Place, Room 12.
